“Simple exposure is far more important than mastery of a subject. Inspiration oftentimes takes care of that anyway, by stimulating the desire for further investigation, and stoking the fires of imagination.”
- The incomparable Madame X
What exactly is The Madame X Academy?
We provide immersive, thematic educational experiences for girls ages 8 to 15, that are designed to be engaging, challenging, multi-faceted and multidisciplinary. We believe that children should have an understanding of history, and exceptional people who came before them whom they never learn about in school; so we integrate lessons related to African-American history and culture into each unique, ever-changing thematic experience.
Why do you call them “experiences” and not classes?
There are so many dimensions, layers and activities within each themed experience, that calling them classes or workshops, doesn’t quite do them justice! A lot of care and attention-to-detail goes into each experience, so that kids learn in a totally immersive, innovative and culturally relevant way. Madame X experiences are not passive in nature, nor are they a solitary activity or lesson. They are designed for maximum impact, education, community and fun!
Madame X loves creating and naming our experiences. Check out some of our past experiences: “Ain’t MisBEEhavin’”, “Oh, Sew Beautiful”, “Don’t Spill the Tea, Sis” and “I Can’t Take My Spies Off Of You,” experiences, as well as our “bonus” photos, here and here!
The Madame X Academy offers fun, sometimes quirky experiences that spark imagination in our children; and our activities support the many concepts and subjects that they’re learning in school.
Madame X Academy is not a STEM class, art program or social club. It’s an experiences program, so we’re a little bit of everything and more. If we offer a class on how to crack a lock in our spy class, we’re not training tomorrow’s cat burglar. We’re sparking imagination, and providing young girls with an opportunity to learn an unusual skill that’s grabbed our imagination through popular culture since the beginning of time. Understanding engineering, the interdependent interlocking components of a lock, demonstrating patience and manual dexterity, are but a few of the outcomes of such an activity.
